"L’Ere d’Ultron" commence très fort trop fort ?. Le plan d’une soeur et de son frère joli clin d’oeil à l’ouverture de "Serenity", cobayes d’un grand méchant retranché dans une forteresse d’un pays de l’Est imaginaire. Cut les Vengeurs passent à l’attaque de la forteresse au cours d’un plan-séquence dingue, qui passe d’un héros à l’autre- écho de celui de la bataille finale du premier Avengers- jusqu’au money shot au ralenti de tous les Vengeurs dans le même plan, image glorieuse d’animation véritable d’une double page de comics. L’ouverture du film est dingue. Même si l’intrigue globale est celle des Vengeurs luttant contre un robot psychopathe cherchant à exterminer l’humanité, "L’Ere d’Ultron" est beaucoup plus compliqué que ça. Un trafic d’armes, des manipulations génétiques, beaucoup de robots, des intelligences artificielles, des bastons dingues, des flash-backs, des flash-forwards. Le miracle d’écriture est toujours là trouvant de façon inouïe la façon de donner son importance à chaque personnage même les nouveaux, Whedon met surtout à l’épreuve les Vengeurs à travers les tourments de leurs passés, jusqu’à la rupture. Le film brise le fragile équilibre qu’avait créé Avengers. "On est des monstres freaks, alors autant agir comme tels", déclare Iron Man. Ce qui explique cette sensation que donne le film de partir dans tous les sens, dans tous les recoins du monde et du cinéma, se cognant sans cesse à son cadre -exemple parfait la baston centrale entre Hulk et Iron Man. En choisissant in fine de détruire plus ou moins son univers, "L’Ere d’Ultron" montre bien qu’il est le film de l’impossibilité. Impossibilité d’être au niveau stratosphérique d’Avengers, impossibilité de se rabaisser à la décontraction et le cynisme de "Thor 2" ou "Iron Man 3", impossibilité d’être différent, impossibilité pour Whedon, complètement lessivé par la production du film, de retrouver la fraîcheur, la joie et la hauteur de 2012. "L’Ere d’Ultron" est écrasant et épuisant, et ses 2h30 vont en laisser plus d’une sur le carreau. Et sombre, aussi pas "sombre" comme les productions nolanesques. Les trailers promettaient une ambiance plombante le bouclier brisé de Cap, un combat de la dernière chance épique et grave. Ce n'est pas vraiment ça. En surface et en résumé, le résultat global est conforme au cahier des charges de Kevin Feige, à base de punch, de comédiens taillés parfaitement et de punchlines. Le vrai sens du film est enfoui. Le temps et plusieurs visions donnera à "L’Ere d’Ultron" toute sa dimension, celle d’un drôle de blockbuster prométhéen. La création a fini par écraser son créateur, qui veut tout brûler avec elle. A un moment, Ultron chante la mélodie de Pinocchio une référence à Frankenstein aurait été plus appropriée.
